The Bottom Line

If you're looking for snorkeling tours, kayak trips, or a visit to the wonderful bioluminescent bay, give Abe a call. He'll have you paddling the Caribbean sea, gasping at a glow-in-the-dark natural wonder, and, maybe, laughing at his awful jokes.

Pros

  • Abe is a fun guy, and that makes his tours all the more entertaining.
  • For a visit to Vieques' underwater wonders and bioluminescent brilliance, you can do no better.
  • Even if you don't know how to swim, you can enjoy these tours.

Cons

  • No fault of Abe's, but the trip to Mosquito Bay is bumpy, squishy, and smelly.
  • If you don't want to exert yourself, stay away; you'll be doing plenty of paddling at a decent pace.

Description

  • Among the most fun kayak and snorkel trips I've had, thanks to the destination, the staff, and the jokes.
  • With prices starting at $30 (and a terrific $100 all-in-one tour), Abe's is very reasonable.
  • You can contact Abe at 787-741-2134 and 787-436-2686 (cell), or make an online reservation.

Guide Review - Abe's Snorkeling and Bio-Bay Tours in Vieques

If there's one thing I can say about Abe, it's that he's got a near-infinite personal library of cheesy jokes. If there's another thing I can say, it's that he runs great tours. Abe's Snorkeling and Bio-Bay Tours is among the most popular outfits on Vieques for a good reason. Abe brings plenty of charisma to the trip; he is near-paranoid (in a good way) about the safety of his group; and he has a terrific staff. Also, Abe's English is excellent, which is not always the case here.

It also helps that he essentially gives you a passport to two of the island's best attractions: its underwater kingdom, and its bioulimescent bay, a personal favorite. Put it all together (and add good-quality equipment into the mix) and you've got a fun island excursion.

Abe runs primarily two types of tours. Kayak snorkeling trips departing from the malecón in Esperanza, and nighttime Bio-Bay tours. The latter, of course, only heads to one destination; the former varies, with several destinations to choose from. (I loved snorkeling off Cayo Afuera, where we spotted, among a variety of fish, a school of translucent squid.)

I can heartily recommend Abe's for a day (or night) out while you're in Vieques.

Horrible Experience, Member mcgregornick

A month before we were to be in San Juan, I called Abe to book a bioluminescent bay kayak tour. I had been reading about these glowing bays for years and was extremely excited to visit what was supposed to be the best on the planet, especially as we would be in Vieques the day after a new moon! Let me mention this reservation was for 6 people as all of my siblings and their spouses were with us. The day of the tour, I called Abe's to confirm our reservation. It was scheduled for 6 pm. The ferry to Vieques runs, in the afternoon, at either 4:30 pm or 8 pm. As we only had two days in San Juan, we wanted to take advantage of our time. Because of this, while I had a representative of Abe's on the line, I asked if we could instead take the 8 pm ferry to Vieques and then take the tour when we arrived. The woman I spoke with assured us this wouldn't be a problem and changed our reservation to 9:30 pm for us. Fast forward to 9:20 pm and we arrive on Vieques. I had forgotten the name of the parking lot we were supposed to tell our taxi driver to go to so I quickly called Abe to get the name. This is when our vacation was shattered. Abe informed us that we would not be able to take the tour! He told us we were too late, despite what his rep had told us! Here we were stranded, dropped off with all our stuff (plus we had a 8 month old baby) at the ferry terminal, in the dark, with no tour to take and no way to get back to San Jaun! The really sad part is that my brother already had a very nice room booked at the San Juan Marriot that we left sit empty just so we could take this tour. Needless to say, everyone was severely disappointed at this turn of events. I really felt bad as I had convinced everyone to go on this tour. Abe offered no sympathy whatsoever. When I had talked to his rep earlier in the day, we were the only people scheduled for a 9:30 pm tour. When I spoke to Abe at 9:20 pm, he said he had 20 people booked for 9:30 pm now. I am sure that was why he could have cared less that he was ruining 6 peoples vacation that they had planned and saved nearly a year for. Abe is nothing but money-hungry and preys on tourists. It was obvious to us that he could care less about how his actions affect the lives of others.
