Chateau Cervantes
One of the sexiest places to stay in Old San Juan, Chateau Cervantes is all about pampering the senses. After all, what is sexier than spoiling your partner rotten? And you can do that here, with a truly gourmet feast at Panza, the hotel's lobby restaurant that is quickly becoming one of Puerto Rico's best; with a limo waiting to whisk you to your hotel; and with your very own butler ready to take care of your slightest whim.
The modern, chic furnishings here are lavish without going over the top (think South Beach cool rather than Trump Plaza gold plating), and the amenities are top class. Oh, and if money is truly no object, book the presidential suite, if only for the view: only a glass pane separates the tub from the bedroom.
El Convento
My sister was married here, so El Convento has a special place in my heart ... but chances are, it will make your heart flutter a bit too. This is Old San Juan charm at its best; the soft yellow walls, the leafy inner courtyard; and a history that spans three and a half centuries (true to its name, it once was a Carmelite convent) all evoke a certain timeless romanticism. You'll feel Cupid's arrow (and your wallet) pinch you a little harder if you book their Romantic Memories of Old San Juan package, a three-night deal which includes:
- Complimentary Afternoon Wines and Hors d'oeuvres
- Hotel Signature Bag
- Bottle of Champagne on Ice In Your Room
- Fresh Flowers In Your Room
- Plate of Chocolates
- Deluxe accommodations
The Gallery Inn
Fountains, cherubs and sculptures abound; the second-floor music room, complete with Steinway piano, is known to host impromptu concerts; wine and cheese meet-and-greets in the afternoon; and, above all, the welcoming charm and friendliness of the staff and owners ... how can you not fall in love at a place like this?
The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan is more like coming to an old friend's country home than checking into a hotel. Each room in this 300-year old house is uniquely decorated, and many have antique furnishings and sumptuous decor. Throw in the many cute niches (deck, garden, courtyard) and the enthusiasm of Campeche, the Inn's chief parrot and Social Director, and it's no surprise that couples love to come here.
Gran Meliá Puerto Rico
A purely personal bias, I find that sprawling vacation resorts aren't as romantic as more intimate hotels and inns. However, of the many big, flashy properties here, the newly upgraded Gran Meliá Puerto Rico offers some serious spoiling. For one, it's tucked away in Coco Beach, a short drive out of San Juan. The rooms are sumptuous, flashing marble and posh, modern furnishings. And visitors who select the "Royal Service" treatment get all kinds of bells and whistles, including:
- A junior suite, many of which have ocean views and a private whirlpool on the balcony
- A private butler
- A private lounge for check-in
- Daily continental breakfast, evening hors d'oeuvres and cocktails
- Access to an exclusive swimming pool and beach area
Horned Dorset Primavera
All that opulence doesn't come cheap, but you do get a distinctive hotel that's a perennial favorite on the Condé Nast Gold List.
The Inn on the Blue Horizon
The Inn has already made my list of best places to stay in Vieques. But it goes above and beyond to offer two distinct packages for amorous couples. The three-night Intimate Long Weekend includes:
- Champagne, chocolates and tropical flowers upon arrival
- In-room coffee followed by breakfast in the terrace dining room overlooking the pool
- Dinner for two one at the Inn's Carambola Restaurant the for one night during your stay
Also available is an Engagement Package that includes:
- A romantically decorated room with rose petals covering the bed and floor, tropical flowers, champagne and strawberries, chocolates and candles
- Dinner at a specially arranged table, with a "chocolate pate" for dessert.
Villa Sevilla
Villa Sevilla offers that elusive gift that so many vacationing lovers are looking for: privacy. Up here, in the heart of the rainforest, you're miles away from San Juan and light-years away from wherever you came. You get your own chalet, which is large, spotless, and comfortably furnished. The Chalet Bella Vista, in particular, is magnificent, with a lovely pool and a hammock-ready porch that looks out over a panoramic vista of lush greenery. A trail leads down to a river where you could easily bathe in the nude if you wished, and a chef is available to prepare your meals.
True, these chalets are equipped to fill families, but they aren't a bad option for a couple who want to enjoy the hideaway romance of a cabin in the forest.
