From Botello to Basquiat: The Beautiful Art Galleries of Old San Juan

By

Among Old San Juan's most inspired cultural attributes is its teeming arts scene. The Art galleries of Old San Juan vary from hole-in-the-wall exhibitions to elegant, opulent spaces. Local artists are flourishing and are well represented, and the quality of the work you'll find here is excellent. These are over 20 galleries within the old city walls, making for a remarkable concentration in such a small area. These five represent some of the best that Puerto Rico has to offer.

Galería Botello

Galería Botello is an oasis on busy Cristo Street. Its cool, arched halls, refreshing patio where you can sit in peaceful meditation to the accompaniment of a gurgling fountain, and of course, its collection, make it a uniquely beautiful and peaceful sanctuary. Check out Angel Botello's iconic sculptures and paintings, as well as the work of other established Latin American artists. Also, don't forget to check out the small but impressive collection of santos, which are hand-carved figurines of saints and one of Puerto Rico's most beloved handicrafts.

Obra Galería

Located on the relatively quiet Cruz Street, Obra Gallery is an airy, tastefully sparse hall that could easily belong in Soho. Think smooth, polished wood floors, leather ottomans, French windows showing off a lovely viewe of the San Juan Bay, and an eclectic, revolving collection of contemporary art, which has featured Jean-Michel Basquiat, Nick Quijano, and portraitist Jesus María del Rincón, among others. Owner José Alegría is a charming and friendly host.

Galería Sánchez

A tiny space on Fortaleza Street, the main feature at this gallery is the collection of sweeping landscapes by gallery owner Erick Sánchez. The collection also includes expressionist and abstract works. Erick is usually at the gallery to answer questions about his work.

Galería Sin Título

On Luna Street, Galería Sin Título lives up to its funky, bohemian name (roughly translated, it means "No-name Gallery"). Located on the second floor, it's also among the harder ones to find, if you don't know where to go. Among its collection are drawing, photograph, and conceptual expressions by both established artists and up-and-comers from Puerto Rico and beyond. The gallery showcases diverse forms of artistic expression, and often hosts theater and drama clinics.

Siena Art Gallery

Siena is a good place to find a mix of representative Latin and Caribbean artists. The gallery also boasts a singular collection of santos, which are far more impressive than the ones you'll find in a souvenir shop. The santos are arranged by the the artist who made them and the region he comes from.
