Budget Hotels in Culebra

By Zain Deane, About.com

In general, Culebra is a cheaper destination than the rest of Puerto Rico. People come here to get away from the ritzy trappings found on the mainland, and the island's hotels, for the most part, cater to that rustic, bohemian, down-home vibe. These four will treat you well and offer you comfortable rooms at reasonable prices.

Casa Ensenada

Casa Ensenada means "Harbor House," and it's an appropriate name. This tiny guesthouse may not look like much on the outside, but it's got a lot to recommend it. Run by a pleasant couple, the inn is right on the water and is also the home of Culebra Boat Rentals. There's a dock behind the inn where guests have access to a free kayak. Other amenities include a communal barbecue pit and patio area, and lockers to store your luggage on your last day, if needed. The rooms are quite large and come with a private entrance, air conditioning, satellite TV, and small kitchen. Finally, if you're staying here for the week, the seventh day is free.

Harbour View Villas

Among the fancier options on this list, Harbour View Villas is another well-named inn. Wooden villas perched on a steep hill give you terrific views of the harbour and the dock at Dewey. The one- or two-bedroom villas have high ceilings, French doors and provide a welcoming, breezy comfort. But it's the laid back hospitality of the place that makes Harbour View such a great place to stay. There's no need to lock your doors when you go out; your hosts are friendly, and happen to run what is consistently voted the best restaurant on the island, Juanita Bananas.

Mamacita's Guesthouse

One of Culebra's best known names and addresses, Mamacita's is the premier hangout joint on the island. The restaurant and bar are terrific, and there's a very good chance you'll be spending some time here when you visit the island. You also have the option of staying at Mamacita's Guesthouse. The rooms are nothing special, but they are well-kept and air-conditioned, and two of them come with a kitchen. If you've brought your boat, you can dock it at Mamacita's, but the real draw here is the restaurant and bar right at your feet.

Posada La Hamaca

Certainly among the best bangs for your buck, Posada La Hamaca gives you simple, well-maintained rooms right in the heart of Dewey. All have A/C and private bathrooms, but only one has satellite TV, so make sure you ask for it if you can't miss your favorite shows. When you go to the beach, you can take one of the inn's coolers, beach towels and ice for your trip.

Villa Boheme

Located on the "outskirts" of Dewey (easy walking distance from everything in town), Villa Boheme is a tropical retreat with a splash of color and a pleasant atmosphere. The guesthouse has 11 rooms, either with their own kitchen or with access to a communal one. The inn is located right on the water, and some rooms also come with a balcony overlooking the bay. Boaters can dock here for a small fee. Behind the rooms is a large patio where you can chill out during the day. Another useful feature is the outdoor showers, which let you get cleaned up even after you've checked out.
