Once you leave the capital behind, you'll find the rich natural diversity of the island at your fingertips. Beachfront paradise, tropical rainforest, and an archipelago of islands are all part of this beautiful Caribbean destination. And of course, in each of these lie a mix of hotels ready to offer you a room.

East of San Juan - Heading east out of the capital, you come to the magnificent El Yunque rainforest, the Rio Mar neighborhood, and Fajardo, the boating capital of Puerto Rico. Off shore lie Vieques and Culebra, Puerto Rico's two destination islands that offer a whole other vacation experience. Once you head east, you'll find some of the island's biggest and best resorts, along with a few special inns nestled on the slopes of the rainforest, or in the midst of a tiny tropical island:

  • Where to Stay in El Yunque - Eco-resorts, cottages, and rustic guesthouses can be found among the foliage of the rainforest.
  • Rio Mar Beach Resort - The Rio Mar, a Wyndham Grand Resort, is one of the best hotels in Puerto Rico, a secluded resort that offers excellent dining and amenities including spa, golf course and beach.
  • El Conquistador - Easily the largest and most complete resort in Puerto Rico, El Conquistador, or "El Con," really has it all.
  • The Fajardo Inn - A great option for those who want to enjoy the beaches along the east coast at a moderate price, the Fajardo Inn is laid back and welcoming.
  • Best Hotels in Vieques - My top five selections for Vieques hotels.
  • Budget Hotels in Vieques - Five inns, guesthouses and small hotels that offer affordable island living.
  • Budget Hotels in Culebra - In Culebra, the majority of hotels and inns are of the budget-friendly variety; these few stand out from the crowd.
  • Rentals in Culebra - Insiders know that, to live like a king in Culebra, rent yourself a million-dollar home.
  • Club Seabourne - Quite simply, Culebra's fanciest hotel.
South of San Juan - The southern coast of Puerto Rico is known as Porta Caribe, and it's home to a more quaint side of the island and its colonial Second City, Ponce:
  • Hotel Meliá - One of the most quaint and charming hotels in Ponce, this family-run institution is located in the heart of the city, across from the iconic Firehouse Museum, or Parque de Bombas
  • Ponce Hilton - By far one of the nicest hotels in Porta Caribe, the Ponce Hilton has it all, and for a great price.
  • Caribe Playa - The Caribe Playa is a rustic beachfront inn on Puerto Rico's quiet southern coast; a true budget getaway.
  • Marina de Salinas - Located on the water, but not on the beach, these economical motel-style rooms offer a secluded stop in a secluded part of the island.
  • Copamarina Beach Resort and Spa - A large, plantation-style resort on the southern coast, Copamarina offers casual tropical splendor.
  • Parador Guánica - One of Puerto Rico's Paradores, or country inns, Guánica is one of the nicer ones, and one of the most historic.
West of San Juan - The western coast of Puerto Rico, or Porta del Sol, is a surfer's heaven, and it has its share of moderately priced accommodations ... but it also has what I feel is the most spectacular boutique hotels on the island:
  • Horned Dorset Primavera - Quite simply, my favorite hotel in Puerto Rico.
  • The Lazy Parrot Inn - A justifiably popular small hotel that exemplifies what Rincon is all about.
  • Wildflowers Guesthouse - A small budget guest house with plenty of personal attention and a great location just a few minutes away from a terrific public beach.
  • Bahía Salinas - One of the nicest properties in Porta del Sol, Bahía Salinas is a stylish resort located near some of the most popular and beautiful beaches on the island.
  • Cielo Mar - A whimsical pool, plenty of meeting space and gorgeous views make this hotel in Aguadilla a perennial favorite.
So there you have it: my list of Puerto Rico Hotels, which I will keep updating as I travel around the island and try out new places. And if there's a hotel I haven't covered here that I absolutly have to go to, be sure to let me know about it in the forum.
