Review of the Puerto Rico Fine Arts Gallery in Ponce

By , About.com Guide

An Introduction to the Gallery:

Located in the city of Ponce, the Puerto Rico Fine Arts Gallery is a wonderful showcase of contemporary Puerto Rican artists. Founded in 2002, the gallery features paintinga, sculpture, lithographies, drawings and much more. The gallery also offers a nice extra in that it provides a catalog of magazines and clippings where its artists have been featured.

The gallery is located at La Rambla Office Park, 1er nivel, Carretera 14. For more information, call 787-844-2717.

Who You'll Find Here:

The gallery is a veritable who's who of 'Rican artists. It displays works from some of my favorites, including Angel Botello, of whom I've written plenty about; Francisco Oller, one of the most acclaimed masters to come out of the island; and José Campeche, considered one of the most important artists of the New World in the 18th century and the father of Puerto Rican painting; Rafael Tufiño, a Brooklyn-born master who recently passed away but left behind an incomporable legacy for Puerto Rican artists to aspire to. And these are just a few of the prominent names you'll find here.

A Visit to the Gallery:

Ponce is well known for its artistic tradition. The wonderful Ponce Museum of Art is testament to this. And the Puerto Rico Fine Arts Gallery continues to place Puerto Rico's Second City at the forefront of the arts scene.

This is a modern space dedicated to Puerto Rican contemporary artists, although a few, like José Campeche, hearken back to the very beginnings of the Puerto Rican arts scene. The work you'll find here represent various mediums, styles and schools, but they all feature the work of the best of Puerto Rican artistic talent.

If you want to see, and hopefully admire, the contributions of Puerto Rican artists to the local, regional, and global arts scene, this is a great place to start.
