What is "Christmas in Our Beautiful Mountains":
Simply put, it's part of activity is part of an island-wide program to make Puerto Rico's less-visited interior more accessible and attractive to tourists. There's no doubt that San Juan is a wonderful place worth visiting many times, but the tranquil, laid back interior offers a different experience that those who love the outdoors will enjoy. This is small-town Puerto Rico.
Why You Should Go:
If you came for the Christmas lights and the big parade, Utuado is not where you want to be. However, if you want to take your family to a fun event with live music, kayaking on a beautiful lake surrounded by green mountains, hikes, activities for children, and food and arts and crafts stalls, then consider driving out to Utuado for this event. There are also ferry boats that will take you across the lake to restaurants for lunch. It's something different, and a chance to get out and explore a part of the island that you normally wouldn't consider visiting.
The Details:
"Christmas in Our Beautiful Mountains" is a free event, held once a year in December. It's held at the Lago Dos Bocas in Utuado. To get here, take Route 23, going from Arecibo to Utuado and watch for signs for the event.
For the Environmentalist in You:
This event is hosted by Puerto Rico's Comunidades Unidas Para La Protección Ecológica, or United Communities for Ecological Protection. The goal is to enhance awareness of the importance of the environment as well as Puerto Rico's heritage.
