May Calendar of Events in Puerto Rico

By , About.com Guide

From comic book fans to international artisans to urban fiestas, this is a month of diverse fun and entertainment in Puerto Rico.

Highlights: Events Calendar:
  • May 5-6: Arecibo honors its patron saint, San Felipe Apóstol (Saint Phillip the Apostle), with music, food, and parades.

  • May 4-13: Ferinart or the International Artisans' Fair, comes to Old San Juan for a week to showcase the work of artisans from around the world as well as 100 handpicked Puerto Rican masters. If you're looking for a unique, handmade and artistic souvenir, this is where you want to be.

  • May 12-13: To celebrate Mother's Day, Vieques invites you to a Paso fino horse competition at the Club Ecuestre in Barrio Santa María.

  • May 14-20: Gather your appetite, because Restaurant Week is coming to Puerto Rico. This is a chance to experience a set-course menu at many participating restaurants around San Juan for a reasonable fixed price. It's a chance to try new places, revisit old favorites or simply enjoy a gourmet (and budget-friendly) night on the town.

  • May 14-20: The quaint city of Ponce celebrates Danza Week, dedicated to what is considered the most elegant artistic expression of Puerto Rican culture. Danza is a formal dance similar to a waltz, and Ponce is its birthplace. Visit the city for special shows and events commemorating this 19th century tradition.

  • May 18-20: Crash Boat beach in Aguadilla hosts the now 10-year tradition of the Summer Festival, with food, live music and plenty of local flavor by the beach.

  • May 24-38: Just in time for Memorial Day, the Urban Fiesta has become an international party that brings celebs, performers, and revelers together for a weekend of raucous 'Rican fun.

  • May 26-27: Geeks, freaks, and closet 'Rican superheroes, unite! Puerto Rico Comiccon comes to the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan. This year's event welcomes stars like Jason David Frank (one of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers; the red one), Liam O'Brien (the voice of many a video game character), and comic book artist and writer Renee Witterstaetter, among others. Also returning this year is the Gaming Zone Gaming Arena, where you can test your skills at Magic: The Gathering, World of Warcraft, Pokemon and more.

  • May 26-27: Carolina (which is home to the Isla Verde beachfront tourist hotspot) throws its annual patron saint festival in honor of San Fernando de la Carolina. One of the larger patron saint festivals on the island, it includes live folk music, live salsa bands, arts & crafts vendors, games and food kiosks.
