Frontier Adventures Amphibious Tours in Puerto Rico

Frontier Adventures has a good thing going. Armed with a fleet of versatile Argo 8x8 UTVs and sitting on a pristine ranch with over 2,000 acres of diverse terrain, the company gives you a unique and exhilarating way to experience the Puerto Rican outdoors. All you need to bring with you is a willingness to get wet and muddy, a camera, and a sense of outdoor spirit. A change of clothes and shoes is also highly recommended, and there are showers on the premises if you need to de-grime after the trip.

Frontier Adventures is located in Hacienda Campo Rico, just five minutes outside of metropolitan San Juan in Carolina. It offers two tours daily at 9 am and 2 pm, with each tour lasting between 2 and 2.5 hours. Reservations are required. To get here from San Juan, take Highway 26 east toward Carolina and take the third exit after the airport (look for the Econo Billboard). Take the 2nd right onto Avenida Campo Rico Este and follow the road until it ends at a "T". You'll see the gate to Hacienda Campo Rico between two apartment buildings.

Frontier Adventures is what you want it to be. Your tour consists of a turn-on-a-dime, traverse-anywhere 8x8 Argo UTV (or utility terrain vehicle), driven by an expert guide who can navigate his way out of pretty much anything. But it's up to you how fast, muddy, and adrenaline-friendly you want your tour to be. If you tell your driver to kick it up a notch, he'll be happy to oblige. If you prefer a mud-free trek, you'll get that too. Either way, you get driven in these rugged swamp creatures across a field of tall grass and into a mangrove marshland full of brackish pools, slippery slopes and dense coastal foliage. Even the most leisurely ride through this land will produce a few heart-skipping moments, and at least on our tour, more than one unique nickname for one of our passengers.

The tour lasts about two hours, and along the way your driver will educate you about the land, the natural environment, and the local history. After, freshen up at the main building and walk up the short hill to the bar overlooking the ranch, where you can sip a mean mojito in a casual, open-air setting before heading back to town.

The company provides helmets, life jackets, water and fresh local fruit. The tour costs $89 per person, and Frontier also offers family and group discounts. They also provide transportation from San Juan for an additional fee.
