What is the Erin Go Bragh?:
The Erin Go Bragh is a lovely 50-foot ketch that sails out of Fajardo. (She's actually the Erin Go Bragh III: models I and II were sold for bigger and better boats.) Captain Bill and Ingrid are a husband-and-wife team who have been doing this longer than most tour operators in the area; they're also two of the most charming hosts you'll find in Puerto Rico.
What Does She Offer?:
The Erin Go Bragh is available for day sails or overnight charters. The day trips travel to the gorgeous islets just off Fajardo. Overnight charters go to Vieques, Culebra, or St. Thomas.
What to Expect?:
That's an easy one:
- Expect a wonderful day out on the water, basking under the Caribbean sun.
- Island sightseeing, including Palominos, Palomonitos and Icacos: each of these islets is an idyllic strip of unspoiled beach.
- At least one or two chances to snorkel amid coral reefs, swim, discover a new beach, or fish.
- Free drinks and snacks, which might include Captain Bill's "secret recipe" mango salsa and a mean artichoke-and-olive salad.
- Great conversation, including plenty of eco-knowledge thanks to Ingrid's expertise in biology, ecology, and environmental science.
Why Speed When You can Sail?:
As Fajardo is the island's boating capital, there's no shortage of boats, catamarans, and other water craft ready to take you out off shore. But there is something quaint and romantic about sailing from Puerto Rico, especially when you're aboard a beautiful polished-wood sailboat. The Erin Go Bragh takes a maximum of six passengers, so you're guaranteed an intimate experience. And when Captain Bill cuts the motor, unfurls the spinnaker (in a light wind), and cranks the music up, you can't help but smile and think, "this is what the Caribbean is all about!"
