Huge news for an island like no other! Culebra, the tiny jewel with one of the Caribbean's most spectacular beaches, has topped Travel & Leisure's World's Best Awards in 2013. Culebra was voted the best island in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas. It's a fantastic and well-deserved recognition for Culebra, which has (to some extent deliberately) gone under the radar. With nearby Vieques Island grabbing its share of visitors, Culebra has remained an unpretentious, less developed escape.
Even my eight reasons to visit don't quite capture the understated magic of Culebra. It's the last place you want to be if you're looking for a mega resort, roaring nightlife or a sleek, polished and über-modern landscape. There's mainland Puerto Rico for that. Things like casinos and shopping malls simply don't make sense here. Maybe that's why it's Travel & Leisure's top island in 2013.
