There are exciting things happening in Puerto Rico these days. The brand new Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Dorado opened its doors to guests just a few days ago. The even newer Condado Vanderbilt hasn't yet opened its doors to overnight guests, but judging by the initial glimpses of the hotel, it's an opulent throwback to old-school elegance. Even the Fairmont is scheduled to open next year.

And this is all hot on the heels of the St. Regis opening its doors in Bahía Beach, and not that long after the W set up shop in Vieques. In 2012 and 2013, luxury travel welcomes a cluster of swank and stylish newcomers to the island, which makes the island more attractive than ever for those who want a luxurious and exceptional experience.

For those of you who are looking for the crème de la crème in accommodations (not to mention dining, spas, and recreational activities), check out these eight hotels. Perennial contenders (and frequent selections) for Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List status, AAA Five-Diamond Award honors, and five-star designation from respected travel and tourism associations, they  represent the Puerto Rico at its luxurious best.
