Just over a year ago, Puerto Rico launched the first government-led program in the Caribbean to identify and recognize hotels that practice environmentally sustainable policies. In fact, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company did such a good job developing its Green Lodging Program that it received the full support of the EPA.
The first hotel to be included in the program was a no-brainer, a unique and architecturally stunning boutique property on Vieques Island that is easily one of my favorite lodgings in Puerto Rico. The program has now expanded to include three hotels. Each one offers eco-friendly architecture, installations or practices. Each member benefits from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company's marketing efforts, and more hotels around the island are under review for possible inclusion into the program.
Until then, if you're into ecotourism and care to reward places that are going the extra green mile, Hix Island House, Turtle Bay Inn and Villas del Mar Hau are small, welcoming, and eco-friendly places you can call home.
