Weekly Holiday Calendar: December 15-22
Saturday December 13, 2008
As Christmas comes closer, and the Three Kings trudge there way toward the Caribbean (I know that's not in the original version, but the kids here believe enough to leave grass for their camels under their beds), there's more and more happening around the island:
December 16-24: During the nine days leading up to Christmas, Catholic churches all across the island will be conducting Misas de Aguinaldo, a traditional Mass that is almost completely a song service. Hyms are sung to the accompaniment of local musical instruments such as the cuatro (a small guitar), güiro (a notched gourd played with a scraper), and maracas. The mass is held at dawn, and usually at 6am.
December 19: Heineken hosts Plena Libre at the La Placita square in Santurce. This is an open-air bloc party, where you can expect boisterous music, dances and general holiday reverly.
December 20: Utuado celebrates a free outdoor event called "Christmas in our Beautiful Mountains" at the Dos Bocas Lake. The festivities include arts and crafts, live music, local food, kayak rentals, and boat trips. To get here, follow Route 123 which runs from Arecibo to Utuado.
- December 15-16: You can catch the last two days of the International Championship of Paso Fino Horses at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey, San Juan. This competition gives horse-riding enthusiasts a chance to see the magnificent Paso Fino horses, known for their distinct gait and smooth ride. For more information, call 787-258-5300.
