July 4, and July 25
Thursday July 3, 2008
As in the U.S., July 4 is a national holiday in Puerto Rico. It doesn't carry quite the fanfare and pride as you'll find stateside, but it's observed and honored nonetheless. But there is another important day in July that Puerto Ricans commemorate: July 25, Constitution Day. On July 25, 1952, the Constitution of Puerto Rico was ratified, further cementing the island's unique political status as a Commonwealth of the United States. It is a relationship that exists to this day and continues to draw much debate around the island.
July 4 and July 25 encapsulates this duality perfectly. The first holiday celebrates U.S. Independence, while the second honors Puerto Rico's most important government document. Of course, both days are great occasions to go out and have a good time!
